Dzerzhinsky District was an administrative unit that existed within Nizhny Novgorod (Gorky) Krai (later Nizhny Novgorod Region) during the Soviet period. The district covered the territory around the city of Dzerzhinsk and a number of surrounding settlements; by the 1980s its composition had been altered through the transfer of part of its land to neighboring districts.
Composition and territorial changes
A number of settlements now belonging to other administrative units were formerly part of Dzerzhinsky District. For instance, the workers' settlement of Frolishchi in Volodarsky District was part of it until 1986. When the Avtozavodsky District of Nizhny Novgorod was formed in the 1930s, part of its land was allocated specifically from Dzerzhinsky District of Nizhny Novgorod Krai, alongside land from Kanavinsky District.
Connection to the city of Dzerzhinsk
The administrative center of the district was Dzerzhinsk, a major industrial city on the Oka River. The district is mentioned among the territorial units associated with Dzerzhinsk and the Nizhny Novgorod Metropolitan Area.
