Dmitry Nikolayevich Cheryshev (born May 11, 1969, Gorky, now Nizhny Novgorod) is a Russian footballer and coach. As a forward, he played for clubs in Russia and Spain from 1987 to 2003, made 13 appearances for the CIS and Russia national teams, and scored 1 goal. After finishing his playing career, he became a coach and worked with several Russian clubs, including teams from Nizhny Novgorod.[1][2]
Nizhny Novgorod Years
Cheryshev was born in Gorky and began playing football at the Torpedo youth sports school in Nizhny Novgorod, which he joined at the age of eleven, while still a young track-and-field athlete. The school's director at the time was Semyon Gurvits.[1] He took his first steps in professional football with Khimik of Dzerzhinsk (1987–1988), who played in the Second League. After his army service, he returned to the region and spent three seasons with Lokomotiv Nizhny Novgorod (1990–1992): in 1992 he played 18 matches in the Russian Top League and scored 4 goals.[1][2] According to Cheryshev himself, it was Lokomotiv's head coach Valery Ovchinnikov who, "over three seasons, brought him practically from scratch to an invitation to Moscow's Dynamo."[1]
Playing Career
In 1993, Cheryshev moved to Dynamo Moscow, where he spent four seasons (1993–1996). During that time he scored 37 goals in 77 matches in the Russian championship. His most productive season was 1996, when the forward found the net 17 times in 31 games and was named to the list of the 33 best footballers in the country as the second-ranked forward, behind only Vladimir Beschastnykh.[1][2] With Dynamo, he won the 1994/95 Russian Cup and took part in the 1995/96 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.[1][2]
In 1996, he moved to Spain: for five seasons he played for Sporting de Gijón, appearing in 55 matches in the Spanish league and scoring 14 goals (the 1996/97 and 1997/98 seasons).[2] He then moved to Burgos (2001–2002) and Real Aranjuez (2002–2003), after which he ended his playing career.[1] For the CIS and Russia national teams, he played 13 matches over the years and scored 1 goal, including appearances in qualifying tournaments for the European Championship and the World Cup.[1][2]
Coaching career
After the end of his playing career, Cheryshev moved into coaching. In the 2011/12 season, he managed Nizhny Novgorod's Volga in the Russian Premier League (13 matches) and also led the club to the semifinal of the Russian Cup.[2] In the 2016/17 seasons, he coached Mordovia in the First League; in 2013/14, he managed Zenit's youth team in the UEFA Youth League.[2]
In 2018–2020, Cheryshev worked in Nizhny Novgorod again, managing FC Nizhny Novgorod in the First League. In the 2018/19 season, the team under his leadership finished 4th, playing 38 matches (18 wins, 8 draws, 12 losses).[2] Since the 2023/24 season, he has been coaching Yaroslavl's Shinnik in the First League.[2]
Family
Cheryshev's eldest son is the footballer Denis Cheryshev (born 1990), a native of Nizhny Novgorod who grew up in Spain and came through the academy of Madrid's Real. When his son was playing for the club's youth team, Cheryshev said of him: "My eldest son Denis's fame has long since surpassed mine. If before, people in Spain used to say about me, 'Cheri, the Sporting Gijón player,' now I am simply 'the father of Cheri, the Real Madrid player.'"[1]
