Demolition of the block between Gogol and Zalomov Streets is the demolition of a group of wooden residential buildings in the center of Nizhny Novgorod that began in October 2026. The block is located across from the Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (NNGASU).[1]
Background
As early as 2024, experts at the Nizhny Novgorod Ministry of Urban Development and Agglomeration Development proposed demolishing five dilapidated buildings in this block in order to free up the land for a new phase of residential construction.[1]
Course of the demolition
By October 2026, the block's wooden houses had been fenced off, and some of the buildings had already been destroyed. News of the start of the demolition was first published by NN.RU.[1]
Public reaction
The demolition of historic wooden buildings sparked a discussion about preserving the city's identity. The loss of such blocks is regarded as a loss of the city's recognizability and of what distinguishes it from other Russian cities; new construction in their place is generally perceived by residents as alien.[1]
