Kulichness is the popular name for the theory of capital-city status that Nizhny Novgorod's authorities were developing: this category brings together articles about the projects and artifacts that arose along the lines of that idea. For Nizhny Novgorod the theme is tied above all to ambitious urban-development and image-building initiatives that residents received with irony. The most telling examples are Tsar-Gora, nicknamed the Nizhny Novgorod Ziggurat and occupying Minin Square, and Vostochny Keks (the "Eastern Cake") — a culinary and architectural object by the walls of the Kremlin. In the same vein are the Avtozavodskaya Otkrytka-Gigant (the "Giant Postcard") and other public gestures that became part of the city's folklore.
