This category brings together articles about the descents — steep roads connecting the upland part of Nizhny Novgorod with the lower, riverside part of the city. The descents arose as necessary routes between the plateau of the Dyatlov Hills and the banks of the Volga and the Oka, and each of them took shape according to its historical surroundings: the Zelensky Congress led to the trading quarter of Balchug, the Kazansky Descent was built by order of Nicholas I and linked the city to Krasnaya Sloboda, and the Ivanovsky Descent ran down from the walls of the Kremlin. Some of them, such as the Pochtovy Descent, were laid along the bottom of deep ravines that cut the hills into separate plateaus, and they still bear the traces of that relief today.
