The Bashkirova Estate on Grebeshok is an architectural complex in the Grebeshok, which belonged to the merchant Bashkirov family. Anna Ignatyevna Bashkirova acquired the estate in 1894; that same year a project was drawn up for rebuilding the main house, envisaging its expansion.[2]
Owners and history before nationalization
The Bashkirovs were one of the wealthiest merchant families in Nizhny Novgorod.[2] After Anna Ignatyevna acquired the estate, the house was used as a source of rental income: the premises were let to well-to-do residents of Nizhny Novgorod. To increase profitability, a one-and-a-half-storey wing was added along the western boundary of the estate.[2]
The Soviet period and later history
In 1918 the estate was nationalized. Until 1939 the buildings housed a Police.[2] During the The Great Patriotic War, a bomb shelter was set up in the basement, and in the 1950s that same basement was converted into a physical-chemistry laboratory.[2] After the war, the estate buildings were adapted into communal apartments. The last resident left the house in 2008.[2]
