The Avvakum Readings is a scholarly conference dedicated to the memory of Archpriest Avvakum, held in Grigorovo and Bolshoe Murashkino in the Bolshemurashkinskiy District of Nizhny Novgorod Region. It has been held since 2002 at an interval of once every three years.[1]

Organizers and venue

The Readings are organized by the Bolshemurashkinskiy Museum of History and Art, founded in 1962 by Nikolay Ivanovich Ratanov.[1] The conference is timed to coincide with the fact that the Bolshemurashkinskiy District is the birthplace of Archpriest Avvakum: he was born in the selo (a larger village) of Grigorovo in 1620 into the family of a parish priest.[2] Collections of proceedings were published following the first two Readings.[1]

Context

The Readings are part of a broader set of events connected with the memory of Avvakum in the Murashkino land. In 1991 a monument to the archpriest (sculptor V. M. Klykov) was unveiled in Grigorovo, and in 1993 a church dedicated to the Hieromartyr Avvakum was consecrated in Bolshoe Murashkino.[1] In the context of the history of the Old Believers of the Nizhny Novgorod area, the conference is recorded as a regular event since 2002.[1]
