Ashkhabadskaya Street is a street in the central part of Nizhny Novgorod, in Nizhegorodsky District, near Kulibina Park. Its former name was Artilleriyskaya [1].
Named after a Soviet city
Ashkhabadskaya belongs to the layer of Nizhny Novgorod toponymy that took shape during the Soviet decades, when streets were named after cities and districts of the country; in the same fashion, Ufimskaya and Kuzbasskaya Streets also appeared in the city [2]. The former name, Artilleriyskaya, is listed in the reference book "Streets of the City of Gorky" as the only name this street ever had [1]. The broader pattern it belongs to, and the waves of renamings, are described in the article Renamings of Streets and Squares of Nizhny Novgorod.
Location
The street closes off a block bounded on the other sides by Belinsky Street, Slavyanskaya, and Tverskaya; Kulibina Park lies nearby [3][4].
Development plans
In August 2026, the regional Ministry of Urban Development amended the land use and development regulations for the plot within the boundaries of Belinsky, Tverskaya, Slavyanskaya, and Ashkhabadskaya Streets. Part of the engineering and transport infrastructure zone was reclassified as a mixed multi-apartment and public development zone, the maximum building height was set at 18 storeys, and the architectural style was defined as international modernism [3][4].
The changes are linked to plans to build a residential building of 15 to 18 stories with underground parking near Kulibin Park; more than ten existing buildings on the site are slated for demolition [4]. Requirements for glazing, finishing materials, fencing, utility equipment, and lighting have been established for the new buildings [3].
