The Arzamas District School was a primary educational institution that operated in the Nizhny Novgorod Province in the first half of the 19th century. It is known chiefly as the place where Vasily Perov studied — later a major Russian painter and one of the founders of the Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions.
Connection to Vasily Perov
Vasily Perov spent his childhood and youth mainly in Nizhny Novgorod Governorate. He studied at the Arzamas District School from 1843 to 1846, after which he moved on to A. V. Stupin's Arzamas School of Painting, where he studied in 1846–1849 (with a break). Thus the district school became the first stage in the education of the future academician and professor of the Imperial Academy of Arts.
