Arzamassky Okrug is a municipal formation in Nizhny Novgorod Region with the status of an urban okrug, comprising the city of Arzamas and adjacent rural territories. The okrug operates within its present-day boundaries; in 2025 its head was Alexander Shchelokov.[3]

The historical predecessor of the present-day administrative formation was the Arzamassky Okrug of the 1929 reform period: in June 1929 the Nizhny Novgorod Krai was divided into seven okrugs, with the division into uyezds and volosts abolished, and the territory of today's Diveevsky District, in particular, became part of the Arzamassky Okrug at that time. The okrugs lasted about a year and were abolished in July 1930, after which the district-based division of the krai was finally established.[1]

Administration and Development

In July 2022, Dmitry Krasnov, Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of Nizhny Novgorod Region, spent several working days in the territory of the Arzamassky Okrug: he met with residents of the city and the district, inspected improvement and repair projects funded from the territorial support fund, and took part in the festivities marking Arzamassky District Day.[1] During the visit, the operation of the "Safe City" system was assessed: at that time about fifty photo and video recording cameras had been installed in Arzamas, with data from them transmitted in real time to the Unified Duty Dispatch Service and the duty office of the Interior Ministry's municipal department. New server equipment for the video surveillance system was purchased with funds from the deputy's fund.[1]

Recreational areas are being improved in the okrug. In particular, the development of a beach on Morozovskoye Lake in the selo of Morozovka — a popular recreation spot for Arzamas residents — was discussed.[1]

Culture and Social Services

Cultural institutions operate in the rural settlements of the okrug. The House of Culture in the selo of Abramovo, built in 1966, has taken part since 2020 in the federal party project "Culture of the Small Homeland". By 2024, more than 4.1 million rubles had been allocated to the institution for repairs and the purchase of a vehicle: the dance hall was renovated, the facade, roof, auditorium, and a number of service rooms were repaired, and sewage and hot water systems were installed. In 2024 a branch of the Crafts Center opened in the House of Culture, with a folk doll workshop attended by more than 30 pupils.[2] The institution houses a branch of the Vyezdnoye Children's Art School and a library, and hosts 19 clubs and amateur groups; the House of Culture's service area covers several selos with a combined population of over two thousand people.[2]

In the field of sports, the head of the okrug, Alexander Shchelokov, noted in 2025 that the existing infrastructure does not allow the full potential of martial arts to be realized, and announced the construction of new sports facilities.[3]
