Ardatov Uyezd was an administrative-territorial unit of Nizhny Novgorod Governorate that existed from the second half of the 18th century. It was one of 11 uyezds into which the governorate was divided under the new administrative division introduced during that period.

Place within Nizhny Novgorod Governorate

In the second half of the 18th century, Nizhny Novgorod Governorate was divided into 11 uyezds: Arzamas, Ardatov, Balakhna, Vasilsursk, Gorbatov, Knyaginino, and several others. Ardatov Uyezd occupied the southwestern part of the governorate — territory corresponding to the present-day Ardatov District of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.

Activity of the zemstvo institutions

The uyezd had a functioning zemstvo, which organized medical care for the population. In particular, the zemstvo dispatched eye-treatment teams to treat residents of remote rural areas: the Nizhny Novgorod physician Vladimir Nikolaevich Zolotnitsky travelled with such teams free of charge to Arzamas, Lukoyanov, and Ardatov uyezds to treat patients with trachoma and other eye diseases.
