The Anda is a river in Nizhny Novgorod Region, a left tributary of the Pyana. It flows through the territory of the Sergachsky and Pilninsky Districts. The river is 41 km long, with a catchment area of 289 km².[3]

Geography and Hydrology

The river's source is located west of the village of Kuzminka, about 10 km north of Sergach, at an elevation of over 129 m above sea level.[3] From its source the Anda flows east and southeast through treeless terrain. In its lower reaches the river splits into several channels, most of which have dried up, and it flows into the Pyana opposite the selo (larger village) of Mameshevo — 28 km along the Pyana's left bank, at an elevation of over 68 m above sea level.[3] A right tributary of the Anda is the Bryn River. The river passes three kilometers west of the district center, Pilna.[3]

According to data from the summer of 2006, the waters of the Anda are characterized as "clean to moderately polluted" (quality class II–III). The dominant phytoplankton species are representatives of the genus Mougeotia.[3] According to the state water register, the river belongs to the Upper Volga River Basin District; its water system is: Pyana → Sura → Volga → Caspian Sea.[3]

Settlements and Development

The river valley is densely populated. The Anda has selos and villages along it: Kuzminka, Bogorodskoye, Anda (Bogorodsky selsoviet of Sergachsky District), Maloye Andosovo, Sokolikha, Bolshoye Andosovo, and Alekseyevka (Bolshoandosovsky selsoviet of Pilninsky District).[3]

The river's name is linked to the Erzya word andoma — "nourishing": until the 17th century, the banks of the Anda were home to bortnye lands (areas used for wild beekeeping).[2]

In the area of the village of Bogorodskoye, the river runs through fields and meadows; the depth here does not exceed 2 meters, there is practically no current, the bottom is soft and clayey, and the channel is heavily overgrown with aquatic vegetation. The river is home to chub, crucian carp, tench, roach, and perch; in summer, anglers here catch roach, perch, and crucian carp on a float rod using worms.[4][4]
