The «Anatoly Andreyevich Osipov Cup» is a team chess tournament of the foundry production of the Gorky Automobile Plant, played in memory of Anatoly Andreevich Osipov (1928–1990) — head of foundry shop no. 5, chairman of the city chess federation and long-time head of the plant's «Torpedo» sports club. The first tournament was held in 1992. [1]

The tournament

The Cup is contested by shop teams of the foundry production; the tournament is organized by the trade union committee and the production's physical culture council, with the participation of the Osipov family. The Osipov family team plays on equal footing with the shop teams: it is represented by Anatoly Andreyevich's children — Viktor and Elena — and family friends, and part of the prizes is prepared by the family itself. [1]

The seventeenth tournament was held on 23 November 2008. Seven shop teams of three men and one woman each took part in the chess tournament. The Cup was won by the team of foundry shop no. 8 — Yu. I. Krymov, P. A. Tochilov, P. A. Gudkov and A. V. Novikova; second place went to the team of foundry shop no. 4, third — to the pattern shop. The painter of foundry shop no. 1, Vladimir Ivanovich Baydakov, was named the tournament's best player. [1]

Draughts is contested alongside chess: in 2008 six teams took part in the draughts tournament, and there too foundry shop no. 8 won, with the pattern shop taking second place and the chief mechanic's and chief power engineer's services taking third. In all, 75 people took part in that day's competitions. [1]

What remains to be clarified

The tournament's fate after 2008 cannot be traced through the available sources: the plant's trade-union chronicle does not describe later tournaments. It is also unknown whether the cup is still played today — the production has since undergone several mergers and renamings. [1]
