"A Couple from the Future" (Пара из будущего) is a 2021 Russian science-fiction comedy directed by Aleksey Nuzhny. The film's Nizhny Novgorod connection is substantial: the main location is the Gorky Nizhny Novgorod State Academic Drama Theater at 13 Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, and the exterior locations include embankments, bridges, the Chkalov Staircase, and general city views.[1][2]

About the film

The film is a science-fiction comedy. Director Aleksey Nuzhny, by his own account, has Volga Region roots and chooses Nizhny Novgorod deliberately: "I love this city very much, because I myself am from the Volga region, the Volga is in my blood. I like the landscape, the airiness, and the energy of this city."[2] "A Couple from the Future" became Nuzhny's second comedy shot in Nizhny Novgorod, after "I'm Losing Weight" (Я худею).[2] In the plot, the heroine works as an actress, which explains the central role of the theater among the filming locations.

Filming in Nizhny Novgorod

  • Gorky Nizhny Novgorod State Academic Drama Theater (Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, 13) is the film's main location; the scenes with the actress heroine were shot here. The theater building was laid down in 1894; the theater itself was founded in 1798 by Prince Nikolay Grigoryevich Shakhovskoy.[1]
  • The embankments, bridges, and Chkalov Staircase were used for exterior shooting; the sources also mention a simulated image of Nizhny Novgorod in the year 2040.[1][2]
