The 3rd Motorized Rifle Vislenskaya Red Banner, Orders of Suvorov and Kutuzov Division (abbr. 3rd MRD) is a tactical formation of the Ground Forces of the Russian Federation. It was originally formed in 1997 on the basis of the 31st Vislenskaya Tank Division, with its headquarters in Nizhny Novgorod; in 2010 it was reorganized into a brigade, and in 2016 it was re-established with its base in Valuyki, Belgorod Region.[1] Since 2022 it has taken part in combat operations on the territory of Ukraine as part of the "West" group of forces.[1]
Formation History and the Nizhny Novgorod Period
The formation traces its history to the 31st Tank Corps, which existed until 1962, when it was renamed the 31st Tank Division. In 1968 the 322nd Motorized Rifle Regiment was attached to it, after which the division moved from the tank troops to the motorized rifle troops. That same year, the formation was redeployed from the territory of the former Czechoslovakia to Olomouc as part of the 28th Corps of the Central Group of Forces.
In 1990 the regiment was transferred to Nizhny Novgorod, renamed from the 322nd to the 752nd, and once again received tank status. A number of other units joined it, forming the 31st Vislenskaya Tank Division. In 1997 it was reorganized into the 3rd Motorized Rifle Division with a wartime staffing level; the formation's headquarters was located in Nizhny Novgorod.[1] Soldiers of the formation took part in the Second Chechen War of 1999.
Following the military reform of 2008, the 3rd Motorized Rifle Division was reorganized into the 9th Separate Motorized Rifle Vislenskaya Red Banner, Order of Suvorov Brigade (military unit 54046), based in Nizhny Novgorod and Dzerzhinsk. The brigade's headquarters and most of its companies remained in the Sormovo district of Nizhny Novgorod; a smaller site was located in Boguchar, Voronezh Region. In February 2015, the units stationed in Dzerzhinsk were transferred to Boguchar.
Re-establishment and Current Deployment
In 2016 the division was re-established; its permanent bases became Valuyki in Belgorod Region and Boguchar in Voronezh Region.[1] In July 2017, Viktor Muzhenko, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, publicly named the 3rd Motorized Rifle Division in Valuyki among three Russian divisions formed near the Ukrainian border, alongside the 144th Division near Smolensk and the 150th Division in Novocherkassk. Dmitry Peskov, Press Secretary of the President of Russia, responding to similar statements from the Ukrainian side, noted that Russia has the right to change the configuration of its armed forces on its own territory.[2]
Participation in Combat Operations Since 2022
Since the beginning of 2022 the division has operated as part of the "West" group of forces. The formation initially operated in Kharkiv Region; in 2023–2025 the division fought on the Lyman sector of the front.[1]
