The 2026 Russian Super Cup in football was a match for the top trophy of Russian football, opening the 2026/27 season, held on July 18, 2026, at Sovcombank Arena in Nizhny Novgorod. The clash between Spartak (Moscow) and Zenit (Saint Petersburg) ended in a victory for Zenit in a post-match penalty shootout; for the Saint Petersburg club, it was its tenth Super Cup.[2] For Nizhny Novgorod, the match was the second Super Cup match held in the city in its history.[1]

The Choice of Nizhny Novgorod

The decision to hold the match specifically in Nizhny Novgorod was explained by Alexander Dyukov, president of the Russian Football Union. According to him, the city's advantages included a modern stadium built for the 2018 World Cup, well-developed infrastructure, and convenient logistics: Nizhny Novgorod is relatively close to both participating cities, Moscow and Saint Petersburg, which made travel easier for the fans of both teams. An additional argument was the long-standing and clearly expressed desire of Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor Gleb Nikitin to host such a competition.[1]

Preparation and Pre-Match Events

The trophy arrived in Nizhny Novgorod on July 15, three days before the match.[1] Two days before the game, an official presentation took place at Chkalov Airport with the participation of the clubs' former captains: Denis Glushakov (Spartak) and Aleksey Igonin (Zenit).[2] In the stadium's fan zone before the start of the match, a delegation of well-known footballers met with fans: Vladislav Radimov, Yuri Zhirkov, Aleksandr Kerzhakov, and Aleksandr Mostovoy.[2] On the eve of the match, Mostovoy offered a restrained forecast, allowing for either a minimal victory for one of the sides or extra time and a penalty shootout. Andrey Buyvolov, a Nizhny Novgorod footballer of the 2010s and a Russian Cup winner, hoped for a spectacular match in the spirit of the best games of the Latin American national teams at the 2026 World Cup.[2]

The Match

The stadium hosted more than 42,000 spectators.[2] The capacity of Sovcombank Arena is 45,000 seats.[3] For both clubs, the match was the first official game of the new season.

Spartak head coach Juan Carlos Carcedo fielded the team without any regular center forwards: the attack consisted of Markinyos, Pablo Solari, Christopher Martins, and Ezequiel Barco. The starting lineup also included goalkeeper Aleksandr Maksimenko, defenders Christopher Wooh and Ruslan Litvinov, and midfielders Roman Zobnin, Nail Umyarov, and Jedson Fernandes. The team's newcomer, Spaniard Víctor Parada, remained on the bench. For Zenit, Denis Adamov took the goal, Igor Diveev played in central defense, and a group of Brazilian players led by Nino rounded out the lineup.[2]

The match turned out to be tense: the game saw goals, red cards, and clashes between players. Zenit won the post-match penalty shootout.[2]
