Russian Cup in Judo 2023 — a national judo competition held from December 15 to 17, 2023, in Nizhny Novgorod at the Severnaya Zvezda Sports Palace. The tournament was the final major official event of the calendar year for Russian judoka. Its official name is the Fonbet Russian Cup.[4]
Organization and format
The competition was held as part of the Russian Judo Tour, a series of professional tournaments organized by the Russian Judo Federation to support domestic athletes. For Nizhny Novgorod this was already the second Russian Cup in the series.[2] In all, 14 sets of medals were to be contested in the individual events — men and women in seven weight categories each.[1] In addition to medals, the winners and medalists received cash prizes: 100,000 rubles for gold, 50,000 for silver, and 25,000 rubles for bronze.[2]
Each day's preliminary bouts began at 10:00, and the final block at 17:00.[2] The tournament's opening took place on December 14. At the ceremony, welcoming remarks were given by Alexander Vaynberg, a senator of the Russian Federation and president of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Judo Federation; Alexander Kononov, Minister of Sports of Nizhny Novgorod Region; and Sergey Soloveychik, president of the Russian Judo Federation.[1]
Participants
The competition drew 371 judoka from 44 regions of the country — 249 men and 122 women.[3] Nizhny Novgorod Region was represented by nine athletes: Nikita Kudryashov (Nizhny Novgorod, Sambo and Judo Sports School of the Olympic Reserve), Alexey Chentsov, Timofey Saveliev, and Damir Abdullin (all three from Dzerzhinsk, "City of Sport"), Artur Churilov and Nikita Pyatov (Nizhny Novgorod, Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs), Danila Velikanov and Nikita Utenkov (Dzerzhinsk, "City of Sport"), and Valeria Yurova (Greco-Roman Wrestling Sports School of the Olympic Reserve, Bor).[1]
